John Smid is a former ex-gay conversion therapy leader who is now openly gay and an LGBTQ+ advocate. He was the executive director of Love in Action, one of the largest ex-gay Christian ministries in the United States, for over 20 years before stepping down in 2008.
Smid has been vocal about his own journey from promoting ex-gay therapy to accepting his own sexuality and coming out as gay. He has since spoken out against conversion therapy and works to support and affirm LGBTQ+ individuals.
In addition to his advocacy work, Smid has also written a memoir titled "Ex'd Out: How I Fired the Shame Committee" where he shares his personal story of struggling with his sexuality and his involvement in the ex-gay movement.
